〰Indian art of Kathak dance〰

 

Among all the traditional classical dance styles of Indian kathak has a prominent place. Kathak is the name of a community of musicians and dancers. Thus the dance which is being performed by these kathak. Hereditary is called kathak Nritya. Literal meaning of kathak is a story - teller. It is supposed that in ancient times these kathaks used to be appointed in temples for narrafaing mythological stories throw the media of music and dance. 

 In sanskrit lexicans we get a synonimous word for kathak. That is kushilav, which throw's light on the origin of kathak Dance. It is said that sage Valmiki wrote Ramayan and tangt its musical narration to lava and kusha, two sons of lord Ram.

Orchestta of kathak dance is very limited. One Table or Pakgwaj player and one Sarangi or Harmoniam player for Lahra ( Nagma ) is sufficient traditionally. But nowadays some other instruments likes, Sitar ,Sarod ,Flute etc are also used.
